A United States diplomat was reportedly taken from his London home and secretly flown out of the United Kingdom after American authorities began investigating suspected offences involving indecent images of children.
The diplomat was reportedly seized during a raid on his London flat last month and taken to a US airbase before being removed from the country, according to The Sun.
The development has raised questions about how the diplomat was removed from Britain, as US authorities do not have powers to arrest people in the UK.
The Sun also reported that there was no formal request from the United States to extradite the diplomat.
UK ministers are understood to be in contact with the US Embassy over the incident.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that American authorities had informed them about an investigation involving suspected offences in London.
A police spokesperson said: "On Tuesday August 25, US authorities made us aware of an investigation they are conducting into suspected offences in London relating to indecent images of children.
"We continue to liaise with them regarding this matter."
The identity of the diplomat has not been made public.
Reports said the diplomat's removal is connected to an investigation into another person in the United States. However, it is not clear what role the diplomat allegedly played in the investigation or what evidence led to his removal.
The UK government said foreign diplomats working in Britain are expected to obey British laws.
A government spokesperson said: "We expect all foreign diplomats in the UK to abide by our laws, in the same way we expect all UK diplomats to do so when posted overseas.
"As a US investigation is ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage."
The US Embassy also confirmed that it was aware of allegations involving an individual assigned to the embassy.
An embassy spokesperson told The Sun: "We are aware of allegations concerning an individual assigned to the Embassy. The United States government expects all personnel to adhere to the highest standards of conduct, and we take these allegations seriously."
The case has also brought attention to the issue of diplomatic immunity and how foreign diplomats accused of offences in Britain should be investigated.
Diplomatic immunity is intended to protect diplomats from certain legal actions by the country where they are posted. However, questions can arise when diplomats are accused of serious offences outside their official duties.
The issue previously attracted attention in Britain in the case of Anne Sacoolas, a US official who left the UK after a 2019 road crash in Northamptonshire that killed 19-year-old Harry Dunn.
Sacoolas was later convicted of causing Dunn's death but did not return to the UK to attend her sentencing in person.
Radd Seiger, a victims' advocate who worked with the Dunn family, said crimes allegedly committed in Britain should be investigated by British authorities.
Speaking to Sky News, he said: "Diplomatic immunity is a very important process that goes back over centuries and was designed to keep diplomats safe in hotspot countries, for instance, if they were taken hostage."
However, Seiger said diplomatic immunity should not be treated as protection from accountability.
He said it is "not a get out of jail free card" and diplomats should be subject to local investigative processes.
The latest case remains under investigation by US authorities, while the Metropolitan Police said it is continuing to liaise with them.
No conviction has been reported against the diplomat, and the allegations against him have not been tested in court.
It is also unclear whether the diplomat had diplomatic immunity when he was reportedly removed from Britain, whether the US sought a waiver of any immunity or exactly what legal process was used to take him out of the country.
British and US authorities have so far provided limited information, citing the ongoing investigation.
