The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, has claimed that more than 10 million vulnerable Nigerians have received ₦75,000 each under the President Bola Tinubu-led government's conditional cash transfer programme.
He noted that the beneficiaries are largely absent from social media because they cannot afford mobile phones and other communication devices.
Yilwatda made the claim on Saturday while answering questions from journalists shortly after the party's three-day National Executive Council (NEC) retreat in Maiduguri, Borno State.
According to the APC chairman, Tinubu's administration has implemented several programmes aimed at alleviating poverty and cushioning the economic hardship associated with the removal of fuel subsidy.
He explained that many beneficiaries of the government's humanitarian interventions are poor Nigerians who lack access to mobile phones, television and social media platforms, making their experiences largely invisible in public discussions about government policies.
"We have given 75,000 naira to over 10 million Nigerians across the country using the conditional cash transfer under the ministry of humanitarian affairs and poverty reduction," Yilwatda said.
He maintained that the absence of these beneficiaries from online discussions should not be interpreted as evidence that the government's interventions were not reaching vulnerable Nigerians.
The APC chairman also identified road construction, employment opportunities associated with infrastructure projects and student loans as some of the initiatives undertaken by the Tinubu administration.
He said the Federal Government was constructing roads across the country and paying workers engaged in the projects.
Yilwatda's remarks come amid continuing public scrutiny of the Federal Government's conditional cash transfer programme, particularly concerning the number of beneficiaries and the amount disbursed.
In August, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, disclosed that the government had distributed more than ₦600 billion in cash transfers over three years, reaching slightly more than 10 million households.
However, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar subsequently questioned discrepancies between the government's reported beneficiary figures, demanding greater transparency and accountability in the programme.
Meanwhile, speaking on the outcome of the APC retreat, Yilwatda disclosed that the party had reviewed its activities and structures at the national, state, local government, ward and polling-unit levels ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He said the review was intended to assess the party's preparedness for the elections and identify areas requiring further attention.
According to him, the NEC also passed a vote of confidence in President Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima and other APC candidates who emerged from the party's primaries for the 2027 elections.
Yilwatda further disclosed that the party had resolved to strengthen reconciliation efforts across its state chapters, encouraging those yet to establish reconciliation committees to do so.
He explained that the initiative was aimed at addressing internal disagreements and consolidating the party's structures ahead of the elections.
The APC chairman also said the party's leadership would take an active role in communicating the Tinubu administration's programmes and achievements to Nigerians during its electioneering activities.
He added that the NEC commended Nigerians for their support and appealed for continued backing for Tinubu's re-election bid in 2027.
The party also expressed condolences to the government and people of Niger State over the deaths of 37 miners.
