Ohanaeze Ndigbo Sets Date For Fresh Election To Resolve FCT Leadership Crisis

The Global Executive Council (GEC) of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has fixed October 24, 2026, for a fresh general election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter of the Igbo socio-cultural organisation.
The decision was reached after a meeting between a delegation from the organisation's national secretariat in Enugu and stakeholders of the FCT Chapter in Abuja on Saturday, September 6, 2026.
The meeting was convened to resolve the prolonged leadership crisis and factionalisation that have divided the FCT Chapter in recent years, according to Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, in a statement issued in Enugu on Tuesday.
The national delegation was led by the Deputy President General, Prince Okey Nwadinobi, who conveyed the goodwill of the President General, Senator Azuta Mbata.
Nwadinobi urged members of the FCT Chapter to prioritise peace, unity, reconciliation and the collective interests of Ndigbo.
He said the delegation's primary responsibility was to constitute an independent Electoral Committee to organise the fresh election, stressing that the committee must be free from external interference.
According to him, the committee is expected to conduct a credible, transparent, inclusive and peaceful electoral process that will restore stability to the FCT Chapter.
The election has been scheduled for October 24, while the Electoral Committee is expected to publish the election guidelines within two weeks.
The committee is chaired by Chief Ejiofor Onyia, with Ambassador Eddy Onuoha as Deputy Chairman and H.E. Emeka Sibeudu as Secretary.
Other members include Nwadinobi, Chukwu, Chief Charles Nkata, Esq., and Barrister Chizoba Iheka.
Each of the six recognised groups within the FCT Chapter is also expected to nominate a representative to the committee.
The move is expected to pave the way for a new leadership structure and help resolve the disputes that have plagued the chapter.
At the meeting, representatives of the six groups signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), committing themselves to respect the agreed peace pact, electoral process and resolutions reached by the stakeholders.
Speaking on behalf of the Electoral Committee, Onuoha thanked the national delegation for its intervention and pledged that the committee would carry out its responsibilities with diligence and impartiality.
He also appealed to the GEC and other stakeholders to provide the necessary support and cooperation for a successful electoral process.
The meeting was attended by several Igbo leaders, including Chief Ibe Nwosu (Igbo I), Prof. Charles Nwekeaku, Barr. Onwu O. Arua, Chief Andrew Ugwu, Odozi Nwodozi, Igwe Raymond Ugwuagbo, Henshaw Ogubuike, Esq., Mrs Esther Ezeji and Chief Ifeanyi Nwaka, among others.
