The Federal Government has officially renamed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Coastal Highway, citing the President's long-standing vision for the ambitious infrastructure project.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the decision, explaining that the ministry approved the new name to acknowledge President Tinubu's role in conceptualising the highway many years before assuming office as Nigeria's President.

According to Umahi, Tinubu first envisioned the coastal highway about 27 years ago during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State. He described the President as a leader with the determination and capacity to transform bold ideas into reality, noting that the project is now becoming a landmark achievement under his administration.

The minister also provided updates on the progress of the 750-kilometre highway. He stated that construction is ongoing simultaneously across several sections. The first section, stretching from Victoria Island to Eleko Village in Lagos State, covers approximately 47.5 kilometres and includes a dedicated median for a future railway line.

Umahi disclosed that the second section, which extends to the Lagos-Ogun boundary, is about 60 percent complete and is expected to be substantially finished before the end of November, with only some bridge works remaining. He added that construction is also advancing in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ogun, and Ondo states, with varying levels of completion.

Beyond the coastal highway, the minister highlighted steady progress on other flagship road projects, including the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway and the Trans-Sahara Highway. He said the Sokoto-Badagry route is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Sokoto and Lagos, while the Trans-Sahara Highway will strengthen road connectivity between the South-East and the Federal Capital Territory.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is one of several major infrastructure projects being executed by the Federal Government to improve transportation, stimulate economic growth, and enhance regional integration across Nigeria.
