The Nigerian Record: The United States government has cautioned Nigerian and other international travellers against carrying prohibited or restricted items into the country, warning that offenders could face confiscation of goods, financial penalties, prosecution, or even denial of entry.

The alert was issued by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the agency tasked with enforcing federal laws that prevent dangerous, illegal, or restricted products from reaching American borders.

According to the CBP, some items are completely banned from entry because they pose risks to public health, safety, agriculture, wildlife, national security, or the economy.

“CBP officers are always at ports of entry and assume the responsibility of protecting America from all threats,” the agency stated.

The CBP explained that prohibited items are those strictly forbidden by law, while restricted items may only be brought in with special permits, licences, or approvals from relevant U.S. authorities.

Examples of prohibited goods include unsafe toys, vehicles that don't meet U.S. safety standards, bush meat, and illegal substances such as Rohypnol and absinthe. Restricted items include firearms, certain fruits and vegetables, animal products and by-products, and some live animals.

The agency noted that even seemingly harmless products can violate U.S. regulations. “Sometimes the products that cause injury, or have the potential to do so, may seem fairly innocent,” the CBP said, urging travellers not to rely on appearances.

Travellers are advised to verify the status of any items they plan to bring before departing on international trips.

The warning is especially relevant for Nigerians travelling to the U.S., as American authorities have repeatedly intercepted undeclared food items, animal derivatives, medicinal substances, and agricultural products at airports in recent years. Increased scrutiny has been placed on agricultural and animal goods due to concerns over invasive pests, livestock diseases, and public health threats.

Many Nigerian travellers commonly carry local foods, herbs, dried meat, seeds, and traditional products for personal use or for relatives abroad. However, many of these items require declaration, inspection, or advance approval before they can legally enter the United States.

The CBP emphasized that its enforcement efforts are carried out alongside agencies such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Travellers are strongly encouraged to familiarize themselves with U.S. customs rules before departure to avoid delays, seizures, fines, or legal trouble at ports of entry.

The alert comes as more Nigerians travel to the U.S. for tourism, education, business, and family visits, with American authorities stressing that compliance with customs laws is a key requirement for all incoming travellers.
