Former Borno State Governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, has been released on administrative bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after voluntarily presenting himself to the agency for questioning.
The EFCC confirmed that Sheriff was granted bail on Thursday, noting that although he had been released, he could be recalled whenever his presence is required as investigations continue.
No formal charges have been filed against the former governor, and legal proceedings have not commenced. The investigation is reportedly linked to allegations concerning the management of funds received by Borno State from the Federation Account during Sheriff's tenure as governor between 2003 and 2011.
Sheriff, who governed the state under the platform of the former All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), has been under investigation since 2012. Reports indicate that he had previously declined several invitations from the anti-graft agency before deciding to honour its invitation voluntarily.
In addition to the financial investigation, Sheriff has faced longstanding allegations of links to the Boko Haram insurgent group. Earlier intelligence reports had alleged that he played a role in the recruitment and support of members of the group. However, these allegations have remained subject to investigation and have not resulted in a court conviction.
The EFCC has maintained that its inquiries are ongoing and that Sheriff may be required to return for further questioning if necessary.
