Two young women identified as Francess Elema and Hope Osayi were severely beaten by a mob on Wednesday evening at Oluku Bypass after they were allegedly caught in a homosexual act.
Eyewitnesses said the women were dragged out of their room and assaulted with whips and sticks. One of the women sustained a broken leg and was rushed to a nearby hospital. The other escaped with injuries.
A neighbour, who spoke anonymously, said the landlord had threatened to report the women to the police. “He said he would not allow such abomination in his house,” the neighbour said.
Homosexuality is criminalised under Nigerian law. Same-sex relationships can attract prison sentences of up to 14 years.
When contacted, a police spokesperson at the Edo State Command said they were aware of the incident and were investigating. No arrests had been made at the time of filing this report.
