Suspected Boko Haram insurgents have attacked Zaranga village in the Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, with many people feared killed and several others reportedly missing.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday when the insurgents invaded the community, shooting residents and setting houses ablaze.
A resident of the village who asked that his name should not be mentioned in the report because he was not authorised to speak confirmed the attack to PUNCH.
He said at least 11 bodies had been recovered following the attack, while search teams and security personnel were still combing nearby forests for residents who remained missing.
"For now, 11 dead bodies have been recovered. Many people are still missing. Search teams and security personnel are in the forest searching for the missing people," he said.
The resident said the attackers stormed the community in the early hours of the morning, leaving residents scrambling for safety as gunshots rang out across the village.
The attack also left several families devastated, with one resident confirming that his wife and two other members of his family were among those killed.
"My wife and two of my family members were also killed during the early morning invasion of my village," he said.
The reported casualties could increase as efforts continue to locate residents who fled into surrounding forests during the attack.
Residents were said to have joined security personnel in searching the forests for people who could not be accounted for after the insurgents withdrew from the community.
The latest attack has renewed concerns over the safety of rural communities in Gombi and other parts of Adamawa State, where residents remain vulnerable to attacks by insurgents and other armed groups.
For many residents, the attack has compounded fears over the ability of security agencies to protect communities located far from major towns and security formations.
However, the Adamawa State Police Command had yet to officially confirm the attack or the reported death toll as of the time of filing this report.
The command's Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, did not respond to messages and calls seeking reaction on the development while the Police force or security authorities did not issue statements as of the time of filing this report.
The exact number of people killed, missing or injured could therefore not be independently verified.
