A former Kaduna South senatorial aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Engr. Michael Ayuba Auta, is currently facing a four-count criminal charge over alleged fraud amounting to N179million.

Engr. Auta was arraigned before Hon. Justice Chinyere E. Nwecheonwu of High Court No. 43 of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), sitting in Kuje, by the Inspector General of Police on allegations of obtaining money by false pretence.

According to the charge sheet before the High Court of the FCT, the Inspector General of Police alleges that Auta and his company, KYC Holdings Limited, conspired to obtain N179million from Arodiogbu Enterprises Limited through misrepresentation relating to a parcel of land in Guzape, Abuja.

The Inspector General of Police further alleged that Engr. Auta and his company neither transferred valid title to the land nor fulfilled other obligations connected with the transaction.

If the court convicts Auta on the charge of obtaining money by false pretence under Sections 1(1) and 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, he could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years.

The remaining counts include conspiracy under Section 8(a) of the same Act, cheating under Section 312 of the Penal Code, and dishonest conversion under Section 309 of the Penal Code, each carrying additional penalties that the court may impose in accordance with the law.

Hon. Justice Chinyere E. Nwecheonwu of High Court No. 43 of the FCT, Kuje, remanded Mike Auta at the Kuje Correctional Centre after he was unable to meet his bail conditions.

He remained in custody till July 2, when he eventually fulfilled the bail conditions and was released pending the continuation of his trial.

The case was adjourned to November 10 for hearing.
